The holidays are fast approaching, and if you're hoping to cut down your own Christmas tree in Arizona, here's what you need to know.

The state's six national forests (Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino, Coronado, Kaibab, Prescott and Tonto) allow people to obtain a permit to harvest a Christmas tree at certain times of year. The permits vary in price and are sold at various forest offices. In addition, fourth-graders participating in the federal Every Kid in a Park program can receive a free permit. There's a limit of one tree per household. Mail-in and phone orders are available for some locations. We've compiled available information from the forests here. Click each link for more information from the forests' websites. Be sure to bookmark this post; we'll update it as we get more information about permit availability. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests: Permits ($15) have been on sale since early October, and 7,500 permits, including free Every Kid in a Park permits, are available at all five ranger districts. The cutting season runs through December 24, and only designated cutting areas are allowed. Coronado National Forest: Permits ($10) go on sale Tuesday, November 15, at the Douglas Ranger District office (1192 W. Saddle View Road) in Douglas, and trees can be cut in the Chiricahua and Dragoon mountains starting Friday, November 25.

The trees must not exceed 10 feet in height or 6 inches in diameter, the stumps should not exceed 12 inches, and the trees should not be cut within 150 yards of a campground or within 150 feet of any road, trail or body of water. Additionally, beginning Monday, November 28, the Safford Ranger District office (711 14th Avenue, Suite D) in Safford will provide free permits to Every Kid in a Park participants; however, permits will not be sold to the public at the Safford location. The Douglas location will also offer the Every Kid in a Park permits. Coconino National Forest: Permits ($15) go on sale Friday, November 18, at three locations. The Mogollon Rim Ranger Station (8738 Ranger Road) in Happy Jack will have 300 permits; the Flagstaff Ranger Station (5075 U.S. Route 89) will have 200 permits; and the Forest Supervisor's Office (1824 S. Thompson Street) in Flagstaff will have 100 permits. The cutting area is a designated section of the Mogollon Rim Ranger District located about an hour south of Flagstaff, and the cutting season runs through December 24.

Free permits for Every kid in a Park participants will also be available while supplies last. Kaibab National Forest: Permits ($15) go on sale Wednesday, November 16, at three locations. The North Kaibab Ranger District (430 S. Main Street) in Fredonia will have 800 permits; the Tusayan Ranger District (176 Lincoln Log Loop) will have 500 permits; and the Williams Ranger District (742 S. Clover Road) will have 500 permits. Every Kid in a Park participants can get free permits at all locations. The cutting season runs through Christmas Eve. Prescott National Forest: Permits ($15) go on sale Saturday, November 19, at the Bradshaw and Chino Valley ranger district offices, and Monday, November 21, at the Verde Ranger District office. The cutting season lasts from then until December 24. Up to 200 free Every Kid in a Park permits will also be issued. Tonto National Forest: Permits ($15) go on sale Wednesday, November 16, at four ranger stations and the forest supervisor's office.
