So, if you buy yours this weekend, it should still be in good nick by Twelfth Night (January 5), when traditionally decorations and trees are taken down. Give the tree a thorough once-over before you buy it. If the branches are turning brown or crisp at the edges, it won’t last long once you’ve got it home. Give the tree a gentle shake to see if it is beginning to drop its needles.

Each branch should feel heavy with moisture — this will give you confidence that it has been freshly cut.Certain species, such as Nordman fir and Scots pine, have better needle retention than others, such as Norway spruce, but this will be reflected in the price. SLICE OFF THE BOTTOM Once a tree has been cut down, its sap will start sealing over the base, hindering its ability to absorb water. Unlike other strongly scented disinfectants, Pine-Sol smells convincingly of pine needles. Alternatively, try an anti- bacterial mouthwash. Just as it sets your hairstyle, a spritz of hairspray can also preserve pine needles and keep them from dropping. Florists use this trick on bouquets. Don’t squirt the whole tree — aim for the underside of each branch. And bear in mind that hairspray is highly flammable, so don’t use it if you are dressing your tree with lights or burning Advent candles nearby. Adding a penny to the water will help to keep down the growth of bacteria and algae. Copper and other metal alloys, such as brass and bronze, are known to have anti-bacterial properties.
